B.B. King @ The Orpheum Theatre (All Ages) $70/$85, Apr. 27
A few reasons for seeing BB. King at the Orpheum, if you have $70 or $85 to spare, are: BB. King is likely, and without a doubt the single most important electric guitarist of the last half century. And yet, at the same time, he maintains to be an intrinsically humble superstar, an outrageously accessible icon who does not shy from visitors in his dressing room, all with self-effacing graciousness. Tracing his influences from T-Bone Walker, Lonnie Johnson and jazz geniuses Charlie Christian and Django Reinhardt, BB King lives to show off these influences and humbly (yet eloquently) show off his own genius among them, throughout the last 50 years! If you're curious to witness him live, what is often described as King's immediately recognizable guitar style, coupled with his patented pleading vocal style, now's as good a time as any. Let's face it, he's dangerously cute, and he is getting old. See you there.
After the last knob-happy experimental music weekend last weekend, this foyer into classic-blues should be an awesome change. Even for the young among us who, sometimes, refuse to accept that we bow to the sound of the likes of BB. King, John Lee Hooker, Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, Bobby "Blue" Bland, and the like, this show is a must on the social calendar.
