Shit, Vancouver, I have no idea how the hell you managed to hide this night from me all this time. Was it something I did? I apologize profusely. But having thrown myself at your mercy, I can now bask in your aural delights, and shake my ass all night long, just like they did in the '60s. And appropriately so, 'cause that's where things start out at the Mod Club. Young kids dancing to the oldies? This night was the best time I've had in a Vancouver club in years!

052507_mod2.jpgThe Honey Lounge is usually a pretty chill spot, but with Friday night's mod designation, the beats start out fast and furious. But not quite of the 120 bpm variety. The vibe is more about the Ronettes, the Supremes, and motown classics. But where's the gray hairs? The joint is packed with happy hip youngsters. It works well, 'cause it's hard to stick your nose in the air to the oldies. And regardless: the songs rock.

The tracks go from the 60's, edging on up through the 70's, mostly skipping the 80's. At times things might be a tad obvious with a track like These Boots are Made For Walking, but nobody cares after they've had a few.

Anyways, before you know it Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party are on. 250507_mod3.jpgAlt-indie hits are all fine and good, but frankly the R&B classics are way more fun to dance to in my opinion. Show up early.

The Mod Club
The Honey Lounge, 455 Abbott St
Fridays 9pm -2am
$5-7

statusq,

they have My!Gay!Hasbund! and MTSRKRFT DJ-ing and playing tons of psychedelic, indie, and remixes of alot of stuff.

but the crowd is very hipster and the kids get young and younger with their fake-ids.
good music but shitty crowd.

I hear ya. I actually gave up on the club scene a long time ago when dance music suddenly felt stagnant. My bad.

Mod night there is great, but in the last few years, there have been more and more normies and barstars showing up. There's nothing like seeing an 80's mod-revivalist mackin' on and hooking up with some hootchie from the burbs.

There are still more private mod nights around in the summer, but it's pretty tight with all the scooter scenesters.

I remember mod night being kind of a place to be a couple years ago, but it's been ages since I went. Drink prices are too high, the crowd has too many bar-stars, and modern NME pop (most of the menu after 11 or 12) is bollocks.

Danny McCash and his crowd of former hardcore mod night junkies have a night at The Met on thursdays now, which I hear is a pretty good time.

unfortunately, no night can really control the type of crowd they get.
i dont feel that the mod club is that bar-star. it seems to me that its just a place for the average person to go, because the music is fairly universal.
its retro, but its not cool because its "ironic" (hello, thursdays at the met); its cool because the songs written in the 60's were actually really amazing.

ps. $6 doubles, $4 beers...expensive?

Totally, gf. There were no bar stars there at all, unless you count me. More of an indie-geek sorta crowd.
