Vancouver Jazz Festival - Day 8 + Punk Rock Bonus!
Tonight is the last busiest night of the Vancouver Jazz Festival before the bulk of the action moves to the daytime with the free Roundhouse series and the Canada Day celebration on Granville Island. It's been a great ride so far, so why stop now? There's something for almost everybody going on tonight, so read on (links lead to audio samples and artist info):
I'm making tonight another Ironworks evening. The Denis Colin Trio with Gwen Matthews are playing the early show between 8:00 and 10:00, followed by the Tom Varner/ François Houle Quartet who will be playing two sets starting at 11:00.
The Van East Cultural Centre is presenting a night of decidedly more arty sounds that will be produced by a very Vancouver musician-heavy lineup of Talking Pictures with Achim Kaufmann followed by DarkBlueWorld.
The last of the Western Front afternoon series is today at 5:30, so if you missed everything so far, you have one more chance to get into that groove with a collaboration between Misha Mengelberg, Joe Williamson, and Dylan van der Schyff.
If you're looking for something more accessible, then The Centre in Vancouver for Performing Arts is probably the place to go. Tonight we have revered French-American songstress Madeleine Peyroux supported by Steve Dawson's Gold Coast Ensemble.
The final ensemble to take the stage for the "Songs Etc." series at Performance Works is the Jazzland Community with Sidsel Endresen, Bugge Wesseltoft and more, who play their first night of two tonight at 9:00.
It's Friday, right? So of course the Commodore will be going off. Tonight is the Interchill Records Night featuring Adham Shaikh & the Collective, Gaudi's "Dub'n Breakz Live Set", and Andrew Interchill. One of our other BR writers is covering that one, so I'll leave that to them. A preview should be up any time.
Punk Rock Bonus Feature: If ferocious and archetypal punk rock is more your bag and you aren't deterred by the prospect of inhaling lungfull after lungfull of second-hand smoke or having this guy jump on your back, Pub 340 will be raging tonight with skate punk provided by The China Creeps, Jak rock from The Excessives, Ovary Action, and California's Chix Pack. That's some guaranteed fun.
