The Makeout loves Daft Punk Tonight
I think that my very first exposure to Daft Punk was in grade eight when they played "Around the World" at every single highschool dance. Even today, the addictive repeating chant of the song title brings back haunting memories of cheap cologne, smoke machines and getting buzzed off of half a Mike's Hard. While I've grown up a little since my days of pre-pubescent youth (it now takes me at least an entire Mike's Hard to catch a buzz), my need to motion the crafting of boxes around my head with my hands when that song comes on has never left.
Tonight, young and old Daft Punk lovers can you unite at The Makeout's "I heart Daft Punk" dance party! Hosted by The Makeout's regulars, DJs Sincerely Hana and Dani, along with My!Gay!Husband!, this Wednesday night tribute will begin at 10pm at the Royal Unicorn.
Daft Punk began when Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (imagine trying to get that onto a Scantron!) met in Paris in the late eighties. In 1995, they released a single called "Da Funk," which led them to getting signed by Virgin Records. Their debut album, Homework, was released in 1997, containing the commercially successful "Around the World." In 2001, the duo released a second album, Discovery, which contained more hits like, "One More Time" and "Harder, Faster, Stronger", and four years later they released a third album called Human After All.
I'm sure tonight will fill your ears with all your favourite Daft Punk singles, and then some. Dig up that old robot helmet you've had at the back of your dresser all these years. Shine up the shield, and head on down to the Unicorn for some robot-meets-human fun! I'll be the one up at the front crafting boxes around my head with my hands.
