You Say Party? We Say Yes!
You Say Party! We Say Die! are winding down after two years of tireless world touring, but this awesome Vancouver dance-punk band showed no signs of exhaustion as they stormed the stage last night at the Plaza, leading the crowd through song after song of hand claps, furious head bobbing, sing-alongs, and shriek-alongs.
Lead singer Becky Ninkovic's stage persona is equal parts innocent little girl and writhing contortionist, and she commands the fans to follow her every move. She was up close and personal with the girls singing their hearts out in the front row, and invited most of them up on stage during "The Gap" to join in the dance party and sing with the band. The slow jam, sexy groove of "Love in the New Millennium (Your Pants My Couch)" served as a great showcase for Ninkovic's soulful pipes.
The rest of YSP!WSD! kept the momentum going with great bass lines, buzzing keyboards and loud drums driving the beat into everyone's feet. Stephen O'Shea's fantastic opening on "Monster" was like a warm gust of wind hitting the room, infusing the band and the audience with an extra jolt of energy, not that anyone needed it. As the band bid their fans adieu and segued into "Midnight Snack", Becky playfully implored everyone to go home and "eat something delicious." If you didn't get your fill last night, check out their all ages show tonight at the Ukrainian Cultural Centre!
