Concert BReak: March 21 - 27
Sorry for the delay this week! Without further ado, here it is:
Friday, Mar 21
♦ Dragonette @ Commodore Ballroom: Dragonnette are female vocals and dance-electro pop. Opener and local musician Piper Davis will get you warmed up with her dance-drenched music.
♦ Russian Circles @ Richard's on Richards: Experimental rockers from Chicago tour their new album. You can expect Red Sparrows to open.
♦ Oh Sees @ Pub 340: Psychedlic and San-Fransico-based.
Saturday, Mar 22
♦ Jason Collett @ Plaza Nightclub: This member of Broken Social Scene has hit the road for a solo tour.
♦ Mad Professor @ Commodore: Dub from the UK.
♦ Jesse Rose @ Lotus Sound Lounge: The Vancouver stop of the Playing Around Tour, featuring house from Berlin.
Sunday, Mar 23
♦ Too $hort @ Plush Nightclub: Rap and hip-hop from Oakland.
♦ Fake Shark-Real Zombie! @ No Tofu: Fake Shark joins the 1/2 Alive crew for their CD release party—and a party it will be! This shin-dig has a fashion show and features interactive art. Apparently you can even get your hair and make-up done (by donation).
Monday, Mar 24
♦ Plants and Animals @ Media Club: These indie-rockers hail from the province of poutine.
♦ Minus the Bear @ Richard's on Richards: More indie-rock, this time a five-piece from Seattle. Minus the Bear have be featured at Coachella and Langerado.
Tuesday, Mar 25
♦ Bon Iver @ The Media Club: Bon Iver, aka Justin Vernon, spent 4 months alone in a far-off cabin recording his debut album. It looks like the hard work in solitude paid off, as the record was re-released under a label early this year (wiki).
Wednesday, Mar 26
♦ The Greyboy Allstars @ Richard's on Richards: An awesome 'boogaloo' jam band from California. I'm going to this show and will be providing a concert preview and interview of the band in the coming days. Busdriver will open.
♦ Born Ruffians @ Media Club: More Canadian indie-rock. These guys are here touring their new album Red, Yellow and Blue.
Thursday, Mar 27
♦ Vampire Weekend @ Richard's on Richards (Sold Out): This upbeat-pop band from NY is said to have gained their momentum via the wonderful world of blogs. I find it really interesting that they claim African pop and Western classical as major influences (wiki). YATCH to open.
I think that the Born Ruffians should make friends with Vampire Weekend. Watch the videos and tell me if you agree!
