Concert BReak: April 17 - 24
Last week a BR reader commented saying that Concert BReak is lacking local artists. I took a little extra time this week to find some more local talent that eager to perform. This one's for you Vanessa.
Thursday, Apr 17
Check last week's Concert BReak.
Friday, Apr 18
♦ Caribou @ Biltmore: Daniel Snaith is a math Ph.D from Ontario (living in London, England). Apparently he chose his name while tripping out on LSD in the woods—needless to say his music has a psychedelic feel to it.
♦ De La Soul @ Commodore Ballroom: De La Soul are old-school. They've been together since their high school days and have collaborated with Tribe Called Quests, Mase and many more.
♦ The Teenagers @ Richard's on Richards: This French synth-pop group originally formed as a joke...then they realized people like them.
♦ The Wind Whistles @ Railway Club: This is the last local show these fun-loving Vancouver folksters will play before embarking on a Canadian and European tour.
♦ Aaron Leaney @ Rime (Day One): Aaron Leaney is an improvisational jazz saxophonist from Calgary.
♦ Mahogany Frog @ Peanut Gallery (Day One): An experimental instrumental group based in Manitoba.
Saturday, Apr 19
♦ Airbourne @ Plaza Nightclub: This Melbourne-based metal group seem to be heavily influenced by fellow band of country-men ACDC.
♦ The Wiggles @ PNE Forum: Um...er...nevermind.
♦ Aaron Leaney @ 1067 (Day Two): See above.
Sunday, Apr 20
♦ The Raconteurs @ Commodore Ballroom: Apparently Jack White's all-star group kept playing past the creation of "Steady As She Goes". Birds of Avalon will open.
Monday, Apr 21
♦ Ani DiFranco @ Chan Centre: An interesting venue choice for this folk-singing feminist icon. With Animal Prufrock.
♦ Handsome Furs @ Richard's on Richards: This husband and wife duo are indie rockers from Montreal.
♦ Hot Chip @ Commodore Ballroom: This bunch of UK based electro-poppers sold out in a flash. That's probably because their live shows are known for improvisational musical reinvention. Free Blood open.
♦ CunninLynguists @ Lamplighter: This hip-hop trio from down south are often compared to OutKast.
♦ Dirty Bottom @ 1067: This trio of multi-instrument experimentalists fuse the worlds of jazz, reggae, funk and world music.
Tuesday, Apr 22
♦ Midnight Juggernauts @ Richard's on Richards: Indie-psychedeli from Melbourne. These guys have toured with Justice as well as Holy F*ck and Crystal Castles. Seems like a lot of Aussies in town this week! Shy Child open.
♦ The 2008 IGNITE! Songwriters Intensive Showcase @ Vancouver East Cultural Centre: "For the last four months a group of six young songwriters has been working with local musicians Ryan Guldemond, Leah Abramson, and Dan Mangan to create new work to be premiered on The Cultch's stage."
♦ Mahogany Frog @ Railway Club (Day Two): See above.
Wednesday, Apr 23
♦ Simian Mobile Disco @ Richard's on Richards: This production/remix duo from the UK is bound to get you moving.
♦ Ben Rogers @ Railway Club: Ben Rogers is a Vancouver local who dreams of living in the time of Cowboys and Indians.
♦ Shane Philip @ Railway Club (10pm): I'm pretty sure this didgeridoo player from Quadra is a fan of Xavier Rudd though his music is a little less roots and a little more pop.
Thursday, Apr 24
♦ NaRai @ The Stanley: This local R&B artist is hugely talented. Her debut album "Color On The Canvas" is due out this spring.
