So Music Waste (has) will come to an end this week. How did you like it? Steve Louie was is all over it, so be sure to check out his photos!
Thursday, June 5
Go to the last Concert BReak for tonight's shows.
Friday, June 6
♦ Brooke Fraser @ Media Club: This singer-songwriter from New Zealand will be performing tunes from her new album, "Albertine".
♦ Honda Civic Tour @ PNE Forum: Panic at the Disco dropped the circus fetish for this tour (they've also dropped the exclamation mark from their name). The Hush Sound, Motion City Soundtrack and Phantom Planet will also be playing.
♦ Crystal Castles @ Richard's: This is the last 1/2 Alive Friday at Richard's on Richards. They'll be taking control of Pat's Pub every Friday from here on out.
♦ Erykah Badu @ Commodore: This year, Erykah Badu released her first full-length album since 2000. From what I gather, she doesn't wear the African head-dress anymore, but goes for other "distinctive" (i.e. terrifying) style choices. Freaky or not, she can still sing!
♦ Wassabi Collective @ Media Club: This band from Nelson plays hip-hop with mellow, grooving bass-lines. Who knew people in Nelson play hip-hop?
♦ Kingsway @ Fairview Pub: RC Joseph leads his merry band of local folk and rock musicians.
Saturday, June 7
♦ The Submarines @ The Bourbon: This married indie-duo from L.A. are back in town for the second time in 3 months, this time following the release of "Honeysuckle Weeks". I've gotta find a way to get my girlfriend to go on a tour with me....
♦ Rock Plaza Central @ Emily Carr Institute Of Art and Design: The first time I heard of Toronto's Rock Plaza Central, it was when they released an indie-folk version of "Sexy Back".
Monday, June 9
♦ Return To Forever @ Centre for Performing Arts: Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Lenny White, and Al Di Meola reunite for a world tour with Return to Forever. These guys were a part of the first avant-garde rock/jazz fusion movement.
♦ The Ting Tings @ Plaza: This English indie dance-pop duo released their debut album in mid-May.
Tuesday, June 10
♦ Islands @ Plaza Nightclub: Six indie-rockin' fellas out of Montreal, Islands also recently released an album, titled "Arm's Way".
♦ The Black Angels @ Richard's: I think this experimental rock band is a fan of the Velvet Underground. Their name is derived from the song "The Black Angel's Death Song", and their icon is a funky picture of Nico.
Wednesday, June 11
♦ Chantel Upshaw @ Backstage Lounge: Soulful pop from a local songwriter.
♦ Wolf Eyes @ Pat's Pub: This is a noise-rock trio is from Michigan. they play some really psychedelic stuff.
♦ *Fur Bearing Animals @ Media Club: Back from San Francisco, these guys recently released their debut record.
Thursday, June 12
♦ Sea Wolf @ Media Club: A friend of mine caught this band a few times in San Francisco and has enjoyed their mellow indie tunes every time.
♦ K.D. Lang @ Centre of Performing Arts: K.D. Lang is a Canadian country-folk singer who is known for championing gay rights.
♦ Local H @ Pat's Pub: Local H is made up of two guys from Chicago. They couldn't find a bassist, so they added bass pickups to an electric guitar. Problem solved!
♦ Hot Panda @ Railway Club: Upbeat dance-rock from Edmonton.
