Cave Singers @ Richards on Richards

I wasn't planning on shooting the Cave Singers show last Friday but thanks to a last minute +1 from a friend, photo permission and my penchant for going to multiple shows in one night I was there. I missed one of the openers, Whalebones but managed to catch the last part of the set of Lightning Dust. The members of Lightning Dust are Amber Webber and Joshua Wells of Black Mountain along with Ashley Webber (vocals) and Ryan Peters (of Ladyhawk) on drums. Amber's melodic and quivering voice provides a captivating draw. It's kinda hard to isolate her voice and recognize the wonder of it amidst Stephen McBean's psychedelic guitar onslaught for the most part but in Lightning Dust she takes centre stage. The comforting arrangements of their songs would be a much welcome salve to the ears after you've had "In the Future" on repeat way too times.

I saw the Cave Singers early this year at the Media Club and it was a tight intimate show. This time around the crowd was foot stompin' as hard as I've felt the floor at Richards. Josh from Lightning Dust helped out with percussion during "Called". The song calls for the washboard and he was hitting it so hard with his drumstick you can see the slivers of wood fly in the air with each strike.

Setlist:

New Slow
Helen
New Monuments
New Drum
In Jam
Called
Belmar
F Jam
Seeds of Night
New Harm
Dancing on Our Graves
------------------
encore - some new songs they played

Great all around show. I'd definitely recommend people seeing Lightning Dust next time they take the stage.
