Vancouver Music News: Said The Whale acoustic EP, new video from Miss Emily Brown, and Yes Nice western Canada tour

Posted by Marie Elliott / February 21, 2010

Said The WhaleIn this edition: Said The Whale release an acoustic EP with fan cover art, Miss Emily Brown's new video, and Yes Nice get ready to tour the west of Canada. Including additional videos from Hannah Georgas and Yes Nice.

Said The Whale Release Acoustic EP

Just last week one of Vancouver's favourite bands, Said The Whale, released an acoustic EP called Bear Bones. The five-song EP was recorded in the bedroom of the band's vocalist/guitarist, Ben Worchester. So far, it's only available on iTunes.

The band decided to let their fans create the cover art and they received over sixty submissions. They settled on a cute, yet creative drawing, by Abbi MacDonald from Barrie, Ontario (cover art featured above). I really like this artwork, but I have one tiny issue with it: you can't really read the writing. But in all honesty, that's not a huge deal. The artwork should catch your eye and it catches mine. You can view more of the submitted fan artwork here.

At the moment, Said The Whale is heading on tour. They'll be coming back to Vancouver to play the Commodore Ballroom with Plants and Animals on May 5th.

Miss Emily Brown's "Sleeping Lions" Video

Miss Emily Brown was originally born and raised in Ontario but moved to BC when she was 19. She started on Vancouver Island, then moved to Nelson, and finally came to Vancouver to record and engage in the local music scene.

On February 18th, she released the new video for her song "Sleeping Lions," which is from her recent album, In Technicolour. This song is impressively smooth. The keyboard is immaculate and her voice is something I can't quite put my finger on. Unfortunately, there are no sleeping lions in the video but that's OK, I'll get over it. It's still a beautiful video full of sparklers and paper boats.

Yes Nice Confirms Intimate Tour Dates for Western Canada

Yes Nice is an Edmonton/Vancouver-based band. The members are originally from Edmonton but most of the band resides in Vancouver now. This fresh, blossoming indie-rock band will be touring western Canada in early March. Before they go, you can catch them at Chapters on Robson Street this Thursday and Friday (February 25th and February 26th). They're scheduled to start at 7pm and will be playing inside the store. For now, check out the band's video for their great song "Empty Space" below!

There you have it! I'll leave you with a somewhat new video of Hannah Georgas' song, "Thick Skin." Really nice song and interesting video; she's kind of naked throughout the whole thing. Uh oh!

If you want to send Beyond Robson some news about your band or a band you know a lot about, please do! You can send an e-mail here!
