Morning Brew: April 26th
Morning Brew: Bringing you the N.E.W.S.. Now Everything Will Suck.
Mayor Sullivan challenges Anaheim Mayor to friendly wager on Western Conference Semifinal Series. Get this: If Vancouver wins the semifinals and advances to the next round, Mayor Pringle has agreed to wear a Canucks hockey jersey at the next televised meeting of Anaheim city council and if Anaheim wins, Mayor Sullivan will do the same with the Anaheim jersey and flag. OH MAN! That is sooooo crazy! I would be so totally embarrassed if I had to wear an Anaheim Ducks jersey to work!!!!!!
And while all the Canucks hysteria may be getting a little tiring, Mayor Sam Sullivan admitted he is getting a little tired of this. Yeah, being incompetent can get pretty tiring.
We gotta clean up this city. No seriously, the City will give you the garbage bags, gloves, vests and those cool grabber tongies and you can go ahead and do their job for them, mmmkay?
Council needs to get on top of peak oil issue. Yeah, but maybe first our trusted news reporters might wanna mention it like maybe once.
At least Vaughn Palmer is still doing some old-school muckraking as Campbell stonewalls journalists over allegations.
As the Globe and Mail introduce new, cool, hip, G+M 2.0. Its like the iPod of newspapers. Ooh, I wonder if you can customize it?
Sticker Shock: "BC Hydro customers can expect their electricity bills to escalate dramatically in coming years, thanks to the provincial government's energy policy. It bans BC Hydro from developing new power generation, instead forcing the Crown Corporation to buy more and more energy from high-cost private developers -- at prices far higher than those of other options". Gotta love that free-market, trickle-down magic!
And one of those projects is Highway 37. "It's a complete scam, if the purpose of the power line is to get these people off diesel, there's way better alternatives." When going green is driven by green.
Hotel 911: A peek inside the nightmare of DTES SRO Hotels. And these are where the premier expects people to live. "Eighty-five per cent of the hotels charged rates in excess of the $325 per month income assistance shelter allowance for a single employable person. Some hotels charged up to $475 per month. A recent city report indicated that only 230 rooms in the Downtown Eastside were available for under $400 per month."
"Looking for sugar on East Hastings? What might have been an invitation to criminal activity is now a navigational inquiry for Vancouver condo buyers".
New Issue of Tooth and Dagger out now. Look for it in places that make you feel uncool.

I'm getting tired of the constant public housing debate as well. It's just a flag for people top gather around when they don't have anything better to do with their anger and frustration. I've seen various proposals from those advocating better public housing and the prices are extreme to the point of insult.
Yes, I'd rather pay for the olympics (if only given 2 choices) than reinforce the existence of a downtown ghetto that is in dire need of gentrification so that this city may one day develop a real arts "hood".
why does anybody think that better public housing will help anyone anyways? drug addiction is a bit more complex than that isnt it? if anything, people should advocate better treatment centres and more money for research.
