Morning Brew: June 6th

Posted by Sean / June 6, 2007

morningbrew.jpgLook for Morning Brew in print form: Talking paper made by scientists. And you thought reading my sarcasm was bad!

Everybody do the soup-kitchen shuffle! No, wait, don't do that. Don't do the soup kitchen shuffle. Wait, let's have a vote. A) do the soup-kitchen shuffle, or B) don't.

Millions Displaced by Olympics: Study. Study? Yeah, by who? Experts? Pfft. Fuck those guys.

But its okay because a couple of frogs weren't displaced. It evens out.

German Right wing Christian nationalist Angela Merkel chastises Harper on Kyoto. What does that make Harper?

Green party proposes $50/tonne carbon tax. Steal this policy!

While the NDP's position on Gateway is long overdue.

Terminator Seed Ban Act Introduced

If anything's rising faster than the Fraser River these days it's the pools of sweat over at B.C. Liberal Party headquarters as officials nervously monitor the Basi-Virk corruption trial. That is funny. Michael Smyth, who knew?

More disgrace for Mounties. I thought making them wear those costumes was bad enough.

Upset residents protest outside home of rapist.

Dear Surrey, please grow up. Your NIMBY antics are embarrassing. You have the opportunity to put faith in the Canadian way of life, to show that we believe in justice, to give a vote of confidence to the idea that people can right past wrongs. If you have such little faith in the justice system, then why not just shoot everyone whom you think are guilty? Yeah, it'll be fun. It'll be like the Wild Wild West. It'll be like natural selection, oh wait, didn't you ban that from your schools?

The only thing worse than this year's Music Waste guide is this year's Vancouver Patio Guide. Actually, that's not true at all. I might actually go to one of these patios.

This just in: An evening of free experimental films at Cineworks (and also Animatron 2007)

The only thing that pisses me off more than Kevin Falcon and his crappy Gateway project is the NDP and their silence on the issue.

Angela Merkel is a Christian Democrat, not a "Christian Nationalist". Doesn't sound quite so sexy, does it?

But wait a second. Didn't we agree that (besides ourselves, ilustrious alumni that we are,) we didn't want anyone from surrey to ever be in our backyard, puking on babies and punching ESL students on G-Street ? Tell me if we're not doing this cuz I've spent a lot on those neon tazers and DIO sabers. One sleepeless rapist is worth it if keeps the Open Mouthed occupied. I wonder whatever happened to Jeff Adams ?

Sean, with respect, I think you've gone a little too far with the whole "grow up and accept a rapist in your midst because we're Canadians" angle. Surrey residents are entitled to protest precisely because they don't have faith in the Canadian justice system. That doesn't mean they are violent anarchists - it's just a logical reaction that their faith in one part of the system has disappeared because our prisons just are revolving doors for violent creeps. The balconey rapist is only out of prison because our dangerous offender laws were not in place when he was convicted.

A violent serial rapist should not be allowed back into society on a technicality and Surrey residents are fully justified in what they are doing - sending a message to the government that this kind of situation needs to be dealt with, pronto. The system works.

I agree with Mark on this one. Christian Democrats are not Nationalists. Regarding Harpers statement
"...he conceded it is now impossible for Canada to meet its commitments under the Kyoto agreement "without crippling the economy."..."
I can just shake my head in disbelief. I am convinced that if a government makes it harder for corporations to pollute the environment, there will be a push for more research then funding to look into cutting those emissions. More research and funding creates more products and startups, thus acting as a motor for economical growth. Doesn't take much to figure that one out, Mr. Harper...

Surrey residents are justified shooting paint balls at his house? Writing in chalk on his sidewalk, "once a pervert, always a pervert'?

I concur. Sean is right. Nobody has a right to tell this rapist where he can or can't live. I am sorry to tell you, but even former rapists are entitled to the Charter of Rights. Also, please read again... he did his time. He was jailed. So, no, Surrey residents are NOT in their right to behave like total scumbags on account of a wrongfully understood "Not In My Back Yard"-ism (which by the way was originally thought of for hazardous chemical plants, not for reformed serial rapists!)

Funniest thing you've ever written.

"Nobody has a right to tell this rapist where he can or can't live."

You know that your earnest defense of civil rights has brought you to the dark side when...

I'm on Callow's side. We can't expect that 20 yrs won't have an impact on someone. He was never into kids, so the parents could lay off. Ok, keep yr wits about you if you will, but forgiveness is good for everyone.
