Morning Brew: This is What Transparency Looks Like

081408_mb.jpgI know Jon linked to the Cambell conference article yesterday, but I just wanted to point out to all those people who say the APC are a bunch of thugs whose message is lost in violence: "When one reporter from the China Daily, considered by Westerners to be a government mouthpiece, zeroed in how Campbell will handle "anti-Olympic groups such as the Anti-Poverty Coalition," Campbell gave a political lesson of his own. "In Canada we will be open to opportunities for people to express whatever views they have," he said. "There will not be opportunities to break the law, [but] we will make sure there will be full and equal expression throughout the 2010 Olympics." Yes, in Canada we pose as police officers and arrest you. In Canada, we close our VANOC meetings and surround it with secuirty forces. In Canada we throw our Native elders in prison to die. In Canada we tear up villages in favour of massive capital projects.

Woodwards Set To Revitalize Gastown. Awesome. A new blog for me to make fun of.

Kelowna rabbit exterminators call for RCMP protection. "Awk, that's ne ordinary rabbit. That's one of the most foul, cruel, bad tempered rodents ye ever set eyes on"

Starbucks opens in Uranus.

Fraser River works as transport route. Hey, what a weird coincidence that we just happened to build our city right on top of a massive river!

No Fun Province: Pemberton Festival must find new venue. Thought it was too good to be true.

The two most annoying local TV hosts ever have been fired.

Tim McClean and the Wendigo.

LOL, Now I know where the local Jersey Douche contingent blogs. Please start a column dedicated to making fun of 'the buzz'. They were voted the best blog ?!?! by who, they have no comments, they seem very egotistical/ignorant/vain and they have a fucking akon/RickRoss vid as a post lol. jesus what clowns. their comments on that article are way too funny as they feel the need to point out they do not date rape.

Thank god Simi Sara got fired. If I was Dave Garry i would have told here to go F herself LONG ago.

That Wendigo story is very interesting.

I happen to like the "buzz", they ain't half bad. They are refreshing as they aren't so full of themselves thinking they can solve societies ill's by themselves, like some people. They are different and that was needed in Vancouvers blogosphere.

Fair enough Mike. I just skimmed the blog for a bit. I'll just say it doesn't look like something I would like.

Mike, I can understand if Sean rubs you the wrong way, but you find a blog that reviews Cactus Club and talks about bangin' cougars at the Roxy "refreshing?"

Although, there is their fresh political analysis: http://vancitybuzz.blogspot.com/2008/08/liberal-policies-leading-to-economic.html

Whether or not you agree with the points in that post, there's absolutely no need to pen something with that shallow a level of detail 8 months into 2008... unless that guy works for the government and there's a magical law-defying election coming.

The APC's message is lost in violence? Really? cuz I though it was lost in hypocrisy - what with them cheating the truly needy out of homes, purporting anarchy while collecting welfare - - that kinda shite.

As for the meathead's blog about revitalizing the DTES, while his commentary is indeed dull-witted and annoying - I don't think revitalizing the area is a bad thing as long as it's mixed - would you prefer to see it remain a decrepit festering ghetto?

Who exactly do you think is being displaced on that Woodward's Block - a lot of those buildings have been abandoned and rotting for the last 15years. The junkies took over the street scene there after the big W closed, this is a reclamation of a valuable commercial street - and I'd add that while it was open the Woodward's basement food floor did a damn fine job of feeding the hood with accessible low-cost groceries.

oh you crazy BR blogging kids - posting from your Gastown/Yaletown condo lofts
about the plight of the unwashed masses..

I think you folks should stick to the stuff you know about - like the persecution of hipsters..

Chris and Quinn,

Hey if its not your cup of tea, thats fine with me. We all have different tastes, that is what makes us unique. They take a comedic approach to their blog and if it weren't for some of their event updates and small business profiles I'd never hear of them. Oh and I enjoy their musical offerings. It's a great blog that alleviates my boredom after a long work day.

Uh, Nahanee had CANCER. How do you blame her death on the government? And she was sentenced to 2 weeks for civil disobedience - good for her. It isn't civil disobedience if you refuse to accept the consequences (a short term in jail), just bad behavior.

Posted by: Robin at August 15, 2008 2:32 PM | Quote Comment

She died of pneumoinia. Nevertheless, the government is responsible because they felt they were justified in putting an 71 year old CANCER paitent behind bars for standing up for what she believed was right; demanding trasnparency and democracy, something which the Campbell government just promised in response to China's grilling at a press conference.

Posted by: sean Orr at August 15, 2008 2:57 PM | Quote Comment

Sorry Sean, but the Campbell government can't put anybody in prison - don't forget the difference between the legislative, the executive, and the judicial branches. She was sentenced for contempt of court by the judicial branch, a body divorced from the provincial government.

Honestly, I think it sucks that she died, and that they couldn't have given her a lesser charge (sticking an old woman in prison? that's bullshit), but I also agree that people can't break the law without being punished, even if the law is bullshit. That's the nature of civil disobedience.

And just to nit-pick, I don't think they knew she had cancer when they sentenced her. It was discovered after she was released.
