Should ambassadors stay?

While I don't think council should be funneling money from general revenue city coffers to bolster private security in specific areas - neighbourhood BIAs, which are funded by their respective commercial property taxes and in-part administered by the city should be able to ensure their livelihood vis-a-vis panhandlers, rifraff and junkies.

Surely everyone but the most fanatical of povertarians must admit that the scourge of the streets are a disincentive to 'regular-folk' who want to spend money. Should we allow our streets to wither and die so that drug addicts and crazies can continue to have unfettered access?

Yesterday, I actually saw one crackhead holding up another crackhead with a knife, in the middle of the day in Chinatown with Peter Mansbridge doing a news feed less than a block away..

Obviously, there aren't enough cops at $60k+/year to be everywhere all the time.

So if a BIA would rather pay for safety at $10 an hour than pretty planters and colourful lampost banners - then that's their business decision.
