Morning Brew: From a Distance

Posted by Sean / July 13, 2009

Hundreds face public housing rent hikes in Metro Vancouver. Because the economy is doing so well and because land values are super high and whatnot. And because minimum wage hasn't been frozen for 8 years.

How is your commute to Vancouver i.e. please justify our slanted editorial bias by writing in to complain. "The lane closures on the Burrard Street Bridge is expected (sic) to cause congestion and cause delays for Metro Vancouver commuters starting Monday". Wouldn't that actually speed up some people's commutes? Oh yeah, forgot, cyclists don't count as commuters.

Olympic organizers: We're ready for El Nino. What are they going to do, make an El Nino-free zone? Taser it, from a distance?

B.C. court rejects ski jump bid while Supreme Court rules political ads on buses okay. So Translink is within the reach of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, but VANOC is not? Does that make sense to anyone?

Meanwhile a Supreme Court judge has refused to dismiss a B.C. man's lawsuit that claims RCMP officers read his mind. Now, I know what you're all thinking...

Headline of the century: Violence at anti-violence rally.

Emperor Akihito of Japan almost got eaten by a giant polar bear but it turns out it was just a cardboard cutout, so..

With Canwest floundering, Dennis Skulsky might prefer running the B.C. Lions

Leos woo women fans. Or just any fans.

Re: VANOC and Translink - not quite.

The court found that VANOC is subject to the Charter, but the IOC is not. The IOC was responsible for the ski jumping decision, and VANOC couldn't go against them on that issue.

However, they also found that the Charter does apply to VANOC, meaning that their independent activities will be subject to the Charter. This could be very interesting...

i see.

so far the lane closures on the Burrard bridge have caused to try to take other routes, but in some cases we can't avoid. we do support the switch to green options for transportation but expanding the sidewalks is probably the best route.

The 2010 olympics are going to be a great boom for our beautiful city, historically there is always a two year boom after any olympics.
