Morning Brew Fights Back

Posted by Sean / January 29, 2010

Sun, Province to Promote Governments' Homeless Message. "CanWest newspapers co-sponsor government-run public relations centre in Downtown Eastside during Olympics". Just in case as there was any doubt of the collusion between government, corporations, and the media. You people accuse me of being negative, but what do you expect? This is basic stuff here, real Media Studies 101. Morning Brew is an attempt daily to show how this collusion manifests itself in their editorializing and indeed manipulation of information. Hopefully more people will sign up to make Beyond Robson more interesting but for now, this is it.

Oh and I know some of you think I made this entire thing up, but not only is the torch relay based on fascist propaganda, VANOC even uses a clip from a Nazi propaganda film by Leni Riefenstahl.

Speaking of propaganda: Why Vancouver will impress the world. Basically because the rest of the world is complete shiteso we are considered green and diverse by default.

But are the games green or are they just loud?

Olympic spirit dampened as vandals ruin Israeli flags. OK a) what does this have to the Olympics? b) Since when is a piece of graffiti on a sidewalk decal even news?

The RCMP's bad apples are starting to look like a barrel-full. I said that exact same thing the other day.

Welcome to the global warming games. (This is no snow job). The Province recognizes global warming? "They are not officially sanctioned Olympic mascots. They are bears". OK har har.

If you're going to make claims about schooling us on Media Studies 101 and manipulation of information - you might want to include mention of the Tyee's own union and NDP "collusion", and maybe the fact that author Sean Holman is a disgruntled former Sun employee.

Heck, you might even want to look in a mirror before hopping on your sanctimonious high horse

So, jerry, you're saying Vancouver's two mainstream newspapers AREN'T directly helping the government spread propaganda about all the great things it's doing to fight homelessness in the DTES?

Interesting.

That makes absolutely no sense. I am not a journalist, I am not a corporation, I am not government. Yes I have bias but I am not the one who has been charged with the duty of disseminating news. Let's see a comparison of how much money the Tyee donates to the political parties versus how much Canwest does. Canwest gives more money to the NDP than me, Sean Holman, Sean Condon, David Beers, Frances Bula, and any other blogger trying to glean a bit of truth from the mirky grip of big media.

No Jeff - I'm pointing out the irony in citing the Tyee in a comment on propoganda.

The Tyee was started with seed money from the BC Fed. You would be hard pressed to find any Tyee stories that criticize the NDP - I'm not really sure how corporate donations play into it - but as I observe it, both media outlets have distinct biases. I'd add that the Sun is also a sponsor of the Olympics yet they have managed to be somewhat critical of the Games.

I'm not defending Canwest - but assertions as to the Tyee being somehow less manipulative because you happen to agree with there views are ludicrous.

One last point about "fighting homelessness in the DTES".. A big part of the problem is the inference by the rest of the city that somehow these are the DTES's problems.. The problems are concentrated here, not from here.

OK the second paragraph is spot on. The first not so much. You cannot pretend that the Tyee and Canwest are anywhere near the same level of corporation. The Tyee is a blog and Canwest is an international media empire consisting locally of the National Post, Sun, Province, Courier, Global, and BC Local News.

The Tyee was launched by David Beers after seeing first hand the editorial bias and cuts to investigative journalism and a reliance on news wire services. Like I said, Canwest gives money to both the NDP and Liberals. The Tyee I'm almost 100 percent sure does not give any money to any political party. I'd like to hear what Rafe Mair would say to being lumped in with the NDP.

I'm not comparing corporations - I'm contrasting biases, and while the Tyee might not donate to the NDP, they are beneficieries of the largess of traditional NDP backers like Joel Solomon and the BC Federation of Labour and Working Enterprise Group

I dunno - who's in who's pocket? the donor or the donee??

As far as what Rafe Mair has to say about being lumped in with the NDP - you can read it here.

As soon as Rafe started taking a paychecque from COPE 378 it's pretty safe to say that his crumudgeonly old Conservative schtick is little more than a put-on to guarantee himself a seat on the political pundit panel..

Sean, remember the boy who cried wolf? You cry wolf every day. Sometimes there's a reason to (top story today); most times there isn't.

Cry wolf less and we'll care more.

Two things - are there any other kinds of former Sun employees and why, exactly is that a *bad* thing? Either he's relating the facts or he's not - the rest is *your* bias showing.
