Morning Brew: Curling Cool, Dead Teens in Ministry Care, MDs pay for RNs out of pocket

Posted by Sean / March 5, 2010

4400878872_3d330d6053.jpgOlympics have made curling cooler than ever. Uh, yeah -- okay, Dad.

In the meantime, everyone will be making a fuss about how those teens died because they were on the 'party drug' ecstasy. Not much I'm afraid will be made about the fact they are a product of the Vancouver Aboriginal Child and Family Services Society. Put that on a fucking inukshuk and sell it for a couple grand.

B.C. doctors offer to pay for OR nurses. Yeah, because that's the way our health system should work. "So Mr. Hot Shot M.D., you want a nurse to do all your dirty work? Well then you better pay up, Dr. Fancy Pants."

Shipwrecked sailor ate lichen to survive Vancouver Island wilderness. Hey did you know that lichen is a symbiotic organism composed of a fungus and an algae? Holy shit I'm bored, can we bring back the Olympics?

Man shot in the leg ends up bleeding on the floor of a Value Village in Burnaby. Wow that's a really descriptive headline...

BC Hydro pushes for 9.11% rate hike. If they keep this up I'm going to start harvesting all the human shit in my alley and turning it into bio fuel.

First Nations hunger tied to lost sockeye. "When she heard that many Natives were going hungry because of the collapse of the sockeye salmon fishery last year, her instincts told her that this didn't sound right." No shit, this sounds like something out of a Cormac McCarthy novel.

And Frances Street Squats.

Sean-much should be made of the fact at least one of the girls was "in care". I think the general public has a very limited view of what VACFSS and the Ministry of Children and Families do for the kids/teens in their care-it ranges from "what they need" to, all too frequently "not much".
Still I'm not quite sure where you're going with your comment: are you concerned that VACFSS hasn't done enough? Or that one or both were in placed in the wrong home(foster/group/or relative's)?
Just asking.

Oh just the irony in the use of native symbolism when in contrast with reality. The reality is that these were aboriginal teens in the care of the BC Government and the BC Government failed them. If this was some random isolated case of error in the system it would be seen as an outrageous comment indeed, but upon an already broken system as a aresult of constant cuts to the ministry, combined with a stalled treaty process, multiplied by the amount of money spent on the Olympics.

Oh you crazy privileged white kids... Still painting aboroginal people with the same shade of "victim". You know, that is a form of racism itself. Maybe you should let people be responsible for their own decisions to get wasted and not immediately point fingers at the first NGO that comes to mind.

a) wasn't an NGO. It was the government.
b) wasn't random, was the ministry responsible for them
c) would be one thing if it happened in isolation, some freak accident, but there is a long history of mismanagement in the ministry and there is a long line of wrongful aboriginal deaths, much beyond their percentage of the population. See Alert Bay, Williams Lake, Kitimat, Haida Gwaii.

VACFSS is an NGO. They can't table or pass legislation.
2 teenage girls decided to take drugs and drink. Would you rather they had been physically restrained to stop them from going out?
Past tragic government mismanagement and wrongful deaths are acknowledged. You still use aboriginal peoples and issues to inflate and broadcast your sense of righteous indignation. That's a form of cultural appropriation. You're no better than the clergy who ran residential schools.
