Find a Hot Dress, The People's Prom is Back!

20070125peoplespr0m.jpgI'll let you in on a little secret: tickets for the People's Prom are hitting stores tomorrow. Last year they sold out in under a week, and there was a long line up of pink taffeta and fishnets clambering to get in.

But wait, let's back up a bit. If you haven't been, you might not know what you're missing. The People's Prom is East Van's antidote to Valentine's Day. It's a radical and admittedly pretty slutty dance party. It's a Temporary Autonomous Zone where you can make out with your roommate, or your roommate's girlfriend, and it's all okay. And it's a fund-raiser for creative resistance and direct action projects that would never get funding anywhere else. In other words, it's the prom you never had in high school - the kind of prom where a ten speed trumps a limo, thrift store chic rules the night and the bathrooms are genderfree. So if you want to hike up your ball gown and piss in the urinals go right ahead.

It's pretty much the best party of the year. But then again, I'm biased - I'm one of the organizers. And if you wanna meet me, I'm usually shutting down the kissing booth at the end of the night. And by shutting down, I mean last year I broke the table. I've already got a hot little fucshia number I picked up at a thrift shop for a dollar all ready to go.

For shame! This shit is too cool to post to the masses on BR! ;)

Don't worry, it's still in a pretty small venue, so there's only so much of the masses that will even fit inside.

And hey, it's a chance to make out with the readers. I hope they're cute!

After being on sale for two days, it looks like they have officially sold out (is that a new record?).

Krisztina, with tickets selling out every year, have you and the other organizers ever considered a larger venue in order to meet demand?

Yes, one year, 2004, it was on a Saturday night and we held it at the Maritime Labour Centre where we could fit 700 people in.

It was pretty HUGE that year, and as organizers we didn't enjoy it as much as proms in the past, so we debated on it and agreed to keep it "small" aka 500 peeps when Vday falls in the week, and make it big on weekends.

So maybe next year we'll make it bigger, as Thursdays are the cusp of the weekend.
