Salbourg.com Delivers the Goods: Justice, Busy P, DJ Mehdi, So Me; SebastiAn in Review
I take pride in my rational lack of faith. Hell, my parents almost pulled me out of brownies when I was six because the troop leaders made us say the word "God" every week. That said, French DJ duo Justice just might have made a convert out of this atheist with last night's clash of the digital titans at Caprice.
Christian Death Metal I will never understand. Christian contemporary pop just seems like a given- as does Kanye's thanking Jesus every second breath, but Christian electro-madness? Who knew that there couldn't be a better way to preach to the masses? Okay, so maybe Justice's biblical references don't extend far beyond their day-glo cross logo, but the whole Ed Banger crew sure put on one hell of a show.
I went into the building trying to divide the 9-3 time chunk into reasonable sets. 1)Busy P 2)Justice 3)DJ Mehdi 4)SebastiAn 5)So Me, plus the half a dozen resident Salbourg DJs- sweet Jesus how was this going to happen? Expecting a weird mumbo-jumbo of battling micro-sets, I was pleasantly surprised by a tag-team collaborative effort resulting in a decidedly random but no less fantastic three-hour psycho dance-party. Beer spilling and erratic neck-snaps were really the only way to go.
A rain-free crowd (thanks again God) ate up the frenchies' tracks ranging from Amanda Blank to DJ Funk to Rage Against the Machine. You can imagine how a crowd full of young white Vancouverites would eat that shit up. Utter chaos. The only downfall I observed might have been a slight failure to bring much of anything new to the table. Parts of the night sounded like clones of mixes available online. Of course unless you're a gigantic internet geek like me who downloads all the podcasts you probably wouldn't even notice this.
The event was hosted by Salbourg.com. A note about Salon des Bourgeoisie:
You know when something is so good you just selfishly want to keep it to yourself and not let anyone else take that goodness away from you? But at the same time something deep in your soul wants to scream about it from the rooftops like a Mormon on his mission? That goodness for me is Salbourg at The Royal Unicorn Cabaret.
Keep in mind my priorities these days consist of getting effed up and dancing for the most part- I'm aware there's no deep evangelical substance here. Perhaps one day I'll have a little more to go on, but for now, mixing 80s pop with Biggy, modern electro jams and four dollar beers makes for a good Saturday night at least. So this is my screaming it from the rooftops- in blog form.
Local DJs Andrew Andrew Andrew, Paul Devro, Erik Devereux and countless guests keep the crowd moving under a retro neon mirrored ceiling, and comfy booths coat the sides of the room. If you're lucky you can wake up Sunday morning and look on the salbourg site to find an unflattering photograph of yourself that you can't remember posing for.
Aristotle said something or other about the Good. If I was paying attention in class that day I would have known what that was, but I had a killer hangover. So moral of the story.... lets just equate Salbourg with the Good and save all the philosophizing.
