Two Days, Two Shows, Lots of Footwork

superstar dj keoki

This week, Vancouver will be hit with two completely opposite acts of the electronica variety. First up are Treasure Fingers, Kill the Noise, and Datarock, who will grace us with their presence this Thursday. The following night is Superstar DJ Keoki, who hasn't been to Vancouver in years, and whose career has been spanning for a lot longer than that of your average DJ. The two shows are going to be totally different, but both will hopefully get people moving and talking...

kill the noise
Thursday night, three acts will be at Republic: Treasure Fingers, Kill the Noise, and Datarock. Their names have been whispered around in both electronica and indie circles, especially with the recent infiltration of music infused with catchy lyrics and electro. Treasure Fingers is a guy from Atlanta who dabbles in various genres, and who got lots of attention for his remix of Snowden's "Anti-Anti". He was recently signed onto A-Trak's Fool's Gold label, so expect innovative, good dance music. Kill the Noise, whose skull emblem you might already know, hail from New York, have only been around since last year, and have become well-known mostly through word of mouth. They do a a blend of house and electro, and have produced some quality remixes and even better tracks (check out "Hey You" on their Myspace). Datarock are a duo from Norway, who couple fast-paced electro with tongue-in-cheek lyrics. They just released their first full-length CD, and have been known to incorporate aerobics and marching bands into their gigs. Even if none of these names sound too familiar, if you've been hooked on Justice, Chromeo, or anybody from the Ed Banger camp, this might be your cup of tea.

Friday night... Superstar DJ Keoki, at a pretty random venue - The Royal Unicorn Cabaret. Keoki has been around for what seems like forever. Remember the movie Party Monster? Keoki, who was played by Wilmer Valderrama, is Michael Alig's ex-boyfriend, so he's had more than his fair share of drama. And although the rave scene is kind of dead compared to what it was in the late '80s and '90s, Keoki is one of the few who has kept the party going for this long. He has put out fourteen albums, and although he hasn't released anything new recently, there are usually surprises with his shows. The last time I saw him was at a party at the Plaza of Nations (now the Edgewater Casino), so it will be interesting how a very different venue and crowd will react to him. This is a DJ whose music has often been overlooked in lieu of his image, so if you show up, you're probably going to get something quite different than what you expect.

Datarock, Treasure Fingers, and Kill the Noise will be at Republic Thursday, May 22nd. Tickets are $15 through Clubzone. The Facebook event page is here.
Superstar DJ Keoki will be at the Royal Unicorn Cabaret Friday, May 23rd. Tickets are $30 through Clubzone. The Facebook event page is here.
