Vancouver's Got Soul! Thursday's with Tea at Yew York

When I'm looking for a new place to have dinner, I often use this three-pronged criterion: great music, good food and an upbeat vibe. It seemed possible that all these conditions would be met last Thursday at Yew York Tapas Bar, as it appeared stylish and featured Tèaa performer who's recordings implied that she wouldn't disappoint.
When we arrived, the small, dimly lit place was packed, so we squeezed onto stools at the bar. It was clear that the majority of customers were there for the music, and the comfortable feel of the place gave me the impression that the restaurant was a room full of friends. The staff at Yew York were courteous and laid back, they didn't harass people for their next drink order, but patrons remained well served.
We ordered the Pane Fresco, Chicken Souvlaki Wrap, and the Caribbean Chicken Pizza. While we enjoyed the atmosphere at Yew York, I'm sad to say the food looked much better than it tasted.
While the flaws in the food were disheartening, it wasn't hard to stay optimistic since the grooving melodies that filled Yew York did more than compensate. Both Tèa and her drummer, Vladan Nojkovic, sat cramped into a corner of the bar, and though they were missing bassist Jeremy Scott, the two projected a very full sound. To accent a sultry voice, Tèa artfully played the keys and a comical pineapple-shaped shakerall the while contributing to the relaxed atmosphere by maintaining a playful banter between songs. Serbian born Tèa Petrovic is neo-soul with flaira powerful blend that this city's music scene surreptitiously craves.
When I asked her to name musical influences, Tèa listed Vaya Con Dios, The Rolling Stones, Rachmaninoff, and George Michael. The 'Once' soundtrack and Lauren Hill are her current addictions. She's got a B.A. in music and, more importantlythis lady's got soul. The audience sang along with many of her originals and the trio have been known to get the place dancing until the cops stopped the party. Although Yew York lost points on food, I would recommend going on Thursday nights to unwind and listen to Tèa. Grab a beer, enjoy heartfelt music and a welcoming atmosphere; just don't go on an empty stomach!
Tèa's first EP, "Method to the Madness" was released last night at the Cellar Jazz Club. She is regularly featured Thursday nights at Yew York from 8pm onwards.
Yew York Tapas Bar is located at 1602 Yew Street. The phone number is (604) 730-8870.
