Grindin'
The Grouse Grind is a major tourist attraction in B.C, and a place for locals to test their endurance and fitness levels. I have to say, it's a humbling experience. I climbed the Grind for the third time this year today, and it's not getting any easier. As someone who tries to stay in shape by hitting the gym, I always underestimate the absolute torture awaiting me on this mountain. No matter how fit I think I am...this hike is a major challenge. About 5-10 minutes into the climb, I'm already winded, and still have about an hour to go...straight uphill.
By the time I reach the quarter mark, I always wonder why I have convinced myself the hike will be good for me. I don't need to lose weight, I've seen the view from the top before, and I feel absolutely exhausted for the rest of the day. The halfway point never comes soon enough, and almost goes unnoticed as my head is down and I try not to fall backwards. This isn't a scenic hike, it's pure concentration. Not until the very last and steepest stetch do I realize I might just make it to the top without collapsing.
For some reason I keep going back, and so do about 4000 people a day (during busy summer months). But there really isn't anything that compares to the feeling of accomplishment after climbing 2,800 feet. The 16th Annual BMO Grouse Grind Mountain Run is coming up on September 24th to raise money for the BC Lung Association.
