This just in: Tofino is closing its doors to visitors Friday, everywhere from the Wickaninnish Inn down on orders from the mayor. This is not a joke, especially to those locals who depend on the tourism industry - which would be just about everyone I expect. The water shortage is now so critical that private residences are being prioritised, while lodgings and restaurants are told to close up shop til further notice. I think it was Coleridge who said it first: Water, water, everywhere, and not a drop to drink. You read it here second.

This is going to be really bad for business there, especially over Labour Day weekend. Talk about your crappy timings.

It's not so much crappy timing as astronomically bad management and political wetness. (No pun intended!)

I feel so sorry for everyone there, locals and tourists alike. This ridiculous state of affairs could have been avoided if someone had just taken ownership of the problem earlier, rather than various authorities passing the buck. Aside from natural disasters, water shortages do not happen overnight and there was no need for it to come to this.
