I don't buy the school of thought that says poker isn't a sport.

Of course the definition of sport means different things to different people but as long as there is some semblance of competition, in my opinion, it qualifes.

Further adding to my theory is the fact that the World Series of Poker was voted the 11th most admired sports league in North America in a recent poll.

There are two World Series of Poker events with the long-running tournament that takes place in Las Vegas and the inaugural World Series of Poker Europe which took place in London back in September.

While there aren't any current plans, at least that I know of, for a WSOP Canada event, the B.C. Lottery Corporation is presenting the 3rd Annual B.C. Poker Championship at the River Rock Casino.

The preliminary events, which include a Media Tournament, featuring the likes of Squire Barnes (pictured), Ladies Only No Limit Texas Hold'em event, NL Hold'em event, Pot Limit Hold'em event and Main Event Super Satellite, take place between November 18-21.

The grand daddy of the Poker Championship though is the NL Hold'em Main Event which takes place November 22-25, with the winner taking home $612,500.

Players will no doubt be on their toes, sweating, with adrenaline coursing through their veins.

Sounds like a sport to me.
