Does Aquilini have a Football Fetish?
I listen to sports talk radio everyday and although there is a lot of talk about the BC Lions and other teams, let's face the facts, this is a primarily Vancouver Canucks town.
But the most popular sport in the world, football, aka Soccer, seems to be gaining a lot of traction too.
I attended all the games from the Under-20 World Cup last year and I don't remember seeing an empty seat.
I was also at the Nutrilite Canadian Championship game, between Toronto FC (Major League Soccer) and our Vancouver Whitecaps (USL Division 1) recently, and again it was a packed house.
The 'Caps covet a promotion to the MLS and recently added a heavy hitter to ownership with the announcement that fave hoops son, Steve Nash, would be footing part of the bill and would do his part to aid in the bid.
But it looks like majority owner Greg Kerfoot, Nash et al might have a little company.
Dr. Sport, Greg Douglas, and the Globe and Mail are both reporting that Vancouver Canucks owner Francesco Aquilini might be throwing his hat into the MLS arena with a possible franchise bid of his own.
The Whitecaps will move into a renovated BC Place in 2011 and hopefully to a Waterfront Stadium--if all the red tape can be cut.
Aquilni and Derek Corrigan, the mayor of Burnaby, are looking to give Swangard Stadium, the Whitecaps' current home, a makeover of its own and add a new team to boot.
This could get ugly.
