SFU and UBC Representing at Beijing Olympics

olympics080820.jpgIt was difficult, the first week of the Beijing Summer Olympics, with Canada failing to capture any medals.

Anytime I'd listen to sports talk radio, the topic du jour was Canada's medal count--even Jim Rome and some of his dumbass clones took shots.

Fortunately, the dike broke and a flood of medals has come our way; 13 medals at last count.

One of the first to capture a medal was former Simon Fraser University wrestler Carol Huynh (sounds like win fittingly enough), a gold medal in the 48-kilo weight class to be exact.

Meanwhile, the gold medal winning Canadian Olympic men's eight rowing featured Jake Wetzel, a UBC grad student as well as UBC alumni Ben Rutledge and Kyle Hamilton.

In fact, both SFU and UBC have a number of athletes (present and former) competing at the Beijing Summer Games.

There are other current and ex-SFUers competing along with Huynh in Beijing and according to UBC, "nearly 40 members of the UBC community will participate in the 2008 Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Games as athletes, coaches sports doctors and staff."

Hopefully members from both campuses will grab more medals.

Let's not forget UVic student Ryan Cochrane in the 1500m freestyle! He's only 19 too so should be hitting his prime in 2012..
