Not all that long ago, we here at Beyond Robson were accused of "getting a boner at any mention of Lee Matasi's name". Well consider the tent in my trousers to be fully pitched because here's a heads up for the Leeside Fundraiser BBQ that will be happening Saturday, July 22nd between 3:00 and 9:00 pm in the Leeside Tunnel.
I'm sure that most of you know the Leeside story, but in case you don't, the short version is... one day some years ago, Lee Matasi found an abandoned tunnel and got down to the business of building a makeshift skatepark that could serve as a refuge from the Vancouver rains. It didn't take long for word to spread and more people to jump in and help out. Work was done, ramps were donated, and the whole thing snowballed from there. Now the Parks Board is involved (a big thanks to Allan DeGenova) and things seem to be coming along nicely, with construction slated to start sometime in the fall if all goes according to plan.
Want to help out? Of course you do. Round up your friends and come on down to Leeside (found underneath the Hastings and Cassiar connector) on July 22nd. Skate videos, a miniramp, quarterpipes, jump ramps, flat bars, manual pads, barbecued treats, great artwork, prizes... hurray. All proceeds for the event will be directly funnelled into the construction of the park. Special thanks to Matt Smed for being the Leeside Project Coordinator up to now, to Thor Larsen for recently taking up the reins, and to AntiSocial and RDS for sponsoring the event. Don't skate and still want to support the cause? No problem. You can buy "I Love Lee Matasi" t-shirts and skate wheels from AntiSocial, or snag a bag of the soon-to-be-released "Leeside Tunnel Coffee", a custom organic blend from a local roaster, Moja Coffee.

Any ramps/jumps for in-line skates?

Tomorrow, Thurs. 20th from 3pm onward you can also help out by showing up at Leeside to remove the gravel that still remains there, in preparation for the Saturday fundraiser. Even better if you have a shovel, but there should be some provided.
