Remember Raves?
Photo: Christopher Frarry as Bob in 120 BPM
Adults sucking on soothers, wearing phat pants and sparkles. The slinky spineless dancing to mind numbing the beat, beat, beats of techno into the early morning hours. And the drugs, oh lord, the drugs. Does anyone remember the rave scene of the 90s?
I do. And not just because I used to be a party kid but because I played one last night.
See, the 80s has had it's revival, then there was the whole boho/ grunge thing, and now it's time to crack your glow sticks and flashback to a time when status was measured by the circumference of your ginormous pant cuffs.
Upintheair Theatre has resurrected this scene with their show 120 BPM. This site- installed play (in a space near Main and 1st) is based on true stories of West Coast party people. Exploring the highs and lows of excessive partying with biting dark humour 120 BPM runs from April 3- 20. I'd review it but I'm completely biased; I'm in it. I play Pixie the PLUR-fect party girl.
In memory of the late rave scene, which is apparently making a come back according to a recient New York Times article, I encourage you go leave your thoughts about and memories from the rave scene in our comment section below.

I spent my formative years in the rave scene, and although my memories of them are a blur of yellow fleece pants, candy-making on sketchy sunday, and just as suddenly a junglist backlash of baseball hats and people on too much meth... I'm grateful.
Mostly that I'm no longer a raver.
I will definitely try to rouse some ex-party kid friends to check this out.
wow robin - we must have done drugs in the bathroom together at some point. yup, sounds about right. e'd up disco to methed out jungle in three short long years.
