Lunch Break: Sapporo Ramen Shogun - Noodles at High Noon

2008-06-05-dsc_0168_ryan_weal_sapporo_shogun_ramen.jpg Shogun is your Japanese ramen house if you are a daytime city dweller or far away commuter. Located on Hornby beside the Vancity (at Pender) and next to the International Food Fair, you should expect a small crowd by the door. The lineups never take that long as this place moves people through in a hurry.

The food is decent if ramen is your fare and the order will be at your table fast. If you opt for a fried rice and/or curry dish you will also get a kind of miso soup that differs from the norm: a very oniony soup which is very good, it reminds me of a Korean BBQ dish I had in the West End once. Pickled bean sprouts also come with the non-ramen foods on the menu.

And the noodles? They're pretty good too. You will get an assortment of vegetables in your bowl that should make most people happy. The miso chicken ramen has a light touch of teriyaki which is not too sweet, making the dish a filling and different from some of the other ramen restaurants I have been to. Both the ramen and udon offerings are relatively cheap making this place a great spot for casual lunch meetings.

If you're noodles for noodles Shogun will keep you coming back for more.

I highly recommend Kintaro on Denman. It's the only Japanese restaurant in Vancouver that actually feels the same as the places in Japan. It's dirty, you don't want to know where the meat came from, but you cannot get closer to the real thing without booking a trip to Japan.

I've eaten here a few times and always been pleased with the service and the food. My favorite (and only) dish has been the spicy chicken ramen. It is a short wait to be seated at lunch but worth mentioning there's no pressure from the staff to leave quickly. People tend to not to linger anyway as it's mainly a business crowd.

I'd agree, Kintaro is the best place I've found so far for ramen in Van.

Tasty Noodles... One thing though, try to have cash or credit ready for this place, paying with a debit card is a nightmare!

When it opened about 8 years ago, the ramen/udon broth was a lot better and IIRC they only did noodles. It's not surprising your soup reminded you of Korean BBQ because the place changed hands and is run by Koreans now. Still pretty good, but not as good as it was.

Kintaro is another great option. I only wish they were open 24 hours a day, and perhaps a little closer to the office. I'm going to be posting more "after work", i.e., dinner articles in the coming weeks so I'll be sure to make note of it the next time ramen comes to mind.
